Leila didn’t speak for two years at her school in Belgium, the entire time we were stationed there. She didn’t want to get made fun of for how she spoke French and so she expressed herself in movement and body language instead of talking. It was her way of trying to have control over something in a life that is dictated by the military- where and when she moves and for how long, how long her daddy is away. It was her way of coping.
Tristan, my second child, develops a new fear with each new home- fear of a creepy basement, fear of not making new friends, fear of a new language. In Kansas, he has developed a fear of tornadoes. His coping strategy is to put his stuffed animals on the lookout. One looks straight ahead, one to the left, one to the right, one up and one down. No tornadoes will get past his look out!

On my first military move, I shed tears waving goodbye to my family and friends. I started over in an unfamiliar place, unpacking broken possessions in a house that didn’t feel like a home yet.
‍
Over the years, we became a family in these homes. We brought our babies home. They took their first steps and said their first words. We had numerous homecomings, birthdays, and holiday celebrations in these homes. Moving so often is full of challenges, but each one has surprised me in unexpected ways.
